When Orthodontics Meets Aesthetics: Technology Shaping the Future of Cosmetic Dentistry

Two colleagues discuss recent advancements in technology-driven approaches to moving and reshaping teeth. Direct-printed clear aligner therapy is being adopted by a growing number of practitioners in both orthodontic and general practice settings. Dr. Vargo, a seasoned orthodontist, shares how printed aligners have influenced his daily treatment decisions and how this category of appliance differs from thermoformed systems currently available. Dr. Shaw, a general dentist of 25 years who recently incorporated printed aligner therapy into his practice, discusses the clinical outcomes he has observed. Together they review how they evaluate which cases carry a high probability of success and how they approach limiting treatment times and revisions. They also address referral relationships between general practice and orthodontics, and a team-based approach to case generation.
Dr. Shaw will also cover minimally invasive cosmetic veneer technique using a custom, digitally designed 3D-printed matrix to injection mold chairside composite veneers - a technique he has used for nearly a decade. He will review the current generation of this matrix technology and discuss workflow considerations for no-prep and minimal-prep composite veneers, including factors relevant to clinicians new to the technique.

Cementation Conundrums: What to Use When for Strength and Reliability

Zirconia or lithium disilicate? Retentive prep or short clinical crown? Bond it, or just cement it? With more restorative materials and more cement categories than ever, choosing what goes between the tooth and the restoration has become one of the most confusing decisions in everyday dentistry, and getting it wrong shows up later as debonds, sensitivity, and recurrent decay at the margin. In this CE webinar, Dr. Joshua Austin untangles the conundrum with a practical, evidence-based framework for matching the cement to the case. He will cover how restorative material, preparation design, and isolation drive the choice, along with the surface treatment, cleanup, and curing steps that determine whether a restoration lasts. He will also show how a simplified system built around a universal adhesive, a universal resin cement and a fluoride-releasing resin-modified glass ionomer can cover nearly every indirect case with less inventory and less room for error. Attendees will leave with a repeatable decision tree they can use the next morning.

Direct Composite in the Esthetic Zone: A Clinical Panel Comparing Freehand with Guided Matrix Techniques

Patients increasingly ask for smile enhancement that is conservative, affordable, and natural-looking. For many anterior cases, direct composite is the first option clinicians consider. This live panel will be moderated by Dr. Phil Klein, host of the Dr. Phil Klein Dental Podcast. His guests include three clinicians with a practice focus on cosmetic dentistry. Emphasis will be placed on comparing freehand layering with guided matrix and injection-molded composite techniques. The panel will also address how clinicians decide between direct composite and indirect ceramic restorations.
