When Orthodontics Meets Aesthetics: Technology Shaping the Future of Cosmetic Dentistry
Presenter: Dr. Joseph Vargo and Dr. Stephen Shaw
Two colleagues discuss recent advancements in technology-driven approaches to moving and reshaping teeth. Direct-printed clear aligner therapy is being adopted by a growing number of practitioners in both orthodontic and general practice settings. Dr. Vargo, a seasoned orthodontist, shares how printed aligners have influenced his daily treatment decisions and how this category of appliance differs from thermoformed systems currently available. Dr. Shaw, a general dentist of 25 years who recently incorporated printed aligner therapy into his practice, discusses the clinical outcomes he has observed. Together they review how they evaluate which cases carry a high probability of success and how they approach limiting treatment times and revisions. They also address referral relationships between general practice and orthodontics, and a team-based approach to case generation.
Dr. Shaw will also cover minimally invasive cosmetic veneer technique using a custom, digitally designed 3D-printed matrix to injection mold chairside composite veneers - a technique he has used for nearly a decade. He will review the current generation of this matrix technology and discuss workflow considerations for no-prep and minimal-prep composite veneers, including factors relevant to clinicians new to the technique.
